The succulent craze has been going strong for a few years now — have you jumped on board yet? If your lack of a green thumb is holding you back from taking the plunge at your local garden center, succulents are probably the perfect fit for you! Succulents are famously hardy plants native to desert climates, so even the most inexperienced gardeners can keep these plants going strong for years without a problem. Decorating your interiors with them offers charm and style — plus, they’re mood boosters!
So now that you’re hooked on succulents and indoor plants (right?) let’s up the game a little and talk about how to decorate with creative upcycled planters for your new indoor garden.
Upcycled Succulent Planter Ideas:
Because succulents are so adaptable, they’re able to thrive in planters like glass terrariums and other unique containers. This means you can get even more creative and give your living space a little extra flair with help from your plants.
Here are a few ideas to fire up your creativity:
Tea cups or mugs: for a delicate kind of vintage look, dig through your kitchen or hit up your local thrift (or consignment) store to score a one-of-a-kind mug.
Old cans or tins: get an extra-rustic look — search for a sturdy can or tin easily in a garage or recycling bin, then get creative. For added flair, try dipping your can in a splashy paint color or consider repurposing leftover paint cans, tea tins, or soup cans!
Mason Jars: you can get creative with this container, too! Pick out a paint with a chalky finish and add some vibrant color to your jars. These are perfect for a cute, vintage look.
Decorative bowls or vases: you’ll want to head to your local thrift store for these, too!
Anything from antique silver bowls to glass vases fit seamlessly into any home’s decor.
Where to Find Unique Planters
While plant lovers are able to find vintage-looking planters at big box stores, the planters that will stand out from the rest can only be found hidden on the shelves of thrift, antique and consignment shops, waiting for their next purpose in life! Take time to sort through hidden gems and find the perfect planters to elevate your home’s style.
How to Re-Pot Your Succulents With Success
Now that you’ve got your plants and a few creative containers to plant them in, it’s time to go over a few tips on how to successfully transplant your succulents.
- Grab a bag of well-draining cacti/succulent specific soil. This is extremely important because succulents are highly susceptible to root rot.
- Check to see if your pots have a drainage hole. If not, you can choose to place gravel on the bottom of the pot. In any case, you’ll need to water less as to avoid over-saturating the soil.
- Squeeze the side of the plastic container to loosen the soil and release the succulent.
- Carefully loosen the dirt around the roots and place the succulent in the container filled with soil.
- Only water your succulents when the soil is completely dry — usually once every 2 weeks.
