Spring Cleaning: Closet Edition
Reserve enough time
Cleaning out a closet takes time. Reserve from two to four hours to clean your closet.
Sort Clothes Into Three or Four Piles
Traditionally, when giving tips for cleaning out your closets, professional organizers advise you to create Keep, Donate, and Toss piles. We advise you to add a fourth pile: Consign. How will you know what pile to put your clothes in?
Keep: Items you love, that fit you well, make you feel great, and are in good condition. You can make a separate pile for clothes to keep that need mending or repair.
Donate: Items you haven’t worn for the last six months, do not fit, or are in less than like-new condition (but still look good and aren’t beyond repair).
Toss: Clothing that is worn beyond repair or reuse. Think stretched-out elastic waistbands, old tights or undergarments, and single socks.
Consign: High-quality and well-known name brand clothes that are in like-new condition are the best choices for selling clothes to consignment shops.
Pack away your winter clothes
Spring closet cleaning is ideal because you can also make a seasonal switch. In many locations, spring comes slowly, and the transitional weather between the seasons can be a real wardrobe challenge. Pack away your heavy, bulky sweaters, but leave lighter cotton or linen sweaters on the shelf for cool spring days. As you pack away your winter things, you can start sorting out your winter items into your piles. When you are done, set these clothes aside.
Empty–and clean–your closet completely
Once you’ve removed your winter items, sort everything left in your closet into the four piles of Keep, Donate, Toss and Consign. And that means everything. Before you start loading clothes back in, take time to vacuum the floor, dust shelves, and discard any broken hangers or other trash.
Unpack spring and summer clothes into your clean closet
As you pull your items from storage containers, instead of loading them into the closet, sort them into your piles of spring and summer clothes. Then, neatly fold or hang all the clothes in your Keep pile.
Now that you’ve fully cleaned out your closet, you can bag up clothes to donate and toss, and prep clothes for consignment, starting with a fresh run through the laundry, if needed–unless of course, the tags are still on them.
With your newly cleaned closet, there will be lots of room for new items as you shop for spring clothes at Turn Style.
